The Fox Art Car is a large-scale interactive art installation built on a transformed electric utility vehicle and reimagined as a glowing geometric fox. Inspired by the clever, curious, and adaptable nature of Colorado's foxes, the project combines sculpture, light, sound, engineering, and community collaboration into a mobile work of art.
Created by local artist and project lead Carolyn Gardella, alongside a team of Summit County artists, welders, fabricators, mechanics, designers, and makers, the Fox Art Car represents the power of creativity, collaboration, and resourcefulness. What began as a retired utility vehicle has been transformed into an immersive experience designed to spark curiosity, connection, and play.
The fox's faceted body is constructed from a hand-built welded steel frame and wrapped in repurposed sailboat sail fabric, giving the sculpture a unique texture and allowing it to glow from within. Sustainability is a core element of the project. The build incorporates upcycled materials, reclaimed steel, repurposed sailcloth, fabrics, irrigation tubing, plexigass, and a retired electric vehicle that has been upgraded with a modern lithium battery system. Solar charging capabilities further support the project's commitment to creative reuse and environmental responsibility.
The vehicle itself underwent a complete transformation, including chassis modifications, suspension upgrades, larger wheels and tires, custom fabrication, lighting integration, and the construction of the fox's sculptural body. Hundreds of hours of planning, design, welding, fabrication, electrical work, and artistic craftsmanship have gone into bringing the project to life.
By day, the Fox Art Car appears as a striking geometric sculpture moving through the landscape. By night, color-changing LED lighting illuminates the fox from within, highlighting its form and bringing the artwork to life. A carefully designed sound system complements the experience, creating an inviting atmosphere without overwhelming the surrounding environment.
The Fox Art Car is designed to be highly interactive. Guests can ride inside the sculpture, gather with friends, meet new people, and experience the artwork from within. Seating is arranged to encourage conversation and shared experiences, transforming the vehicle into a moving gathering space where art becomes a catalyst for community connection.
More than a vehicle, the Fox Art Car is a celebration of creativity, sustainability, craftsmanship, and the collaborative spirit that makes mountain communities thrive.
